Is testing required to transfer my license?
No. If your license is valid or has not been expired over 6 months, you will not need to retake any tests. However, you will be required to pass a vision screening performed in our Driver Service Center. You must be able to see at least 20/40 with each eye. You may wear contacts or glasses, during the screening. However, if corrective lenses are worn during the vision screening, you will have a restriction code 01 added to your record. This restriction code will appear on your driver license.
I have an out-of-state driver license. What will I need when I come in?
You will need to bring your current driver license, proof of your U.S. Citizenship or legal presence, proof of your Social Security number and 2 proofs of your current Tennessee physical address in your name.
If the name on your license has changed from your proof of U.S. Citizenship, you will need the legal document verifying how/why your name changed. If you are using a document showing legal presence (employment authorization card, foreign passport with I94, etc), that document will need to be updated through USCIS, before visiting a Driver Service Center.
We highly recommend setting up an appointment before going. Request an appointment
